With over 400 clothing brands sold, online couture retailer Revolveclothing.com requires a flexible space for their physical debut store. The boutique will showcase a changing selection of designers and transform periodically into an event space. The design concept builds on modes of flexibility while conceiving the space as a cathedral, emphasizing the existing building’s verticality. An oversized exterior display window announces the entrance to the building, which is set back from the street.
Inside the boutique, a long two-story wall lined with fixed vertical fins leads the customer into the showroom and affords individual 4ft wide display niches for a changing selection of apparel labels. Each fin is cut to a unique profile, countering their repetition in plan with a soft vertical topography. A super-sized changing digital artwork complements the fins. All floor fixtures are minimal, low, and removable.
A passage way leads to an adjacent walled garden containing a set of museum-like vitrines displaying contemporary and vintage fashion pieces. From there, views to Melrose are opened up through the back of the exterior display window.
